Trivial History January 9

1819 Victorian Premier James Francis was dropped off by the stork.Read more about him HERE.

1826 The ayes have it...The first Executive Council for Van Diemen's Land aka Tasmania was appointed.

1854 It's your money Ralph....The first branch of the English, Scottish and Australian Chartered Bank was opened in Melbourne by F.A.Walsh....and keep those pennies in the tea tin for now.


The only cow allowed to graze on Sydney's Domain in 1900 would set off down King St as soon as the Law Courts' clock struck 3pm and head to her owners shop to be milked.

1868 The last convict ship, the Hougoumont, arrived at Fremantle with 279 convicts. Their arrival brought an end to the transportation of prisoners from the UK.Somehow I don't think they got mints on their pillows during their voyage...

1869 The fast clipper ship, 'Thermopylae', reached Melbourne after a record 60 days sailing from London.Show off !

1887 Ure Smith ,painter and publisher, was hatched. The founding editor of Art in Australia and a pioneer of art publishing in Australia.Read more HERE.

Ghost spot-

A house in Minto was built on the site of an old cemetery and residents in the house have had their furniture lifted and thrown about, including their beds while they were still in them.Needless to say, the house often remained empty.

1903 Because he had a free spot in his diary, Hallam Tennyson, 2nd Baron Tennyson and son of English Poet Laureate Alfred, Lord Tennyson, was appointed the second Governor-General of Australia.

1909 Australia defeated England nine points to three in the first Rugby Union test match at Blackheath's Rectory Field in England. Again with the squirrel gripping query !

1911 And you think you were shocked...The tram line between Curl Curl and Manly Pier in Sydney was electrified.

1940 Australian Comforts Fund was re-established .The Australian Comforts Fund (ACF), based on its First World War predecessor, raised money for comforts parcels for Australian service personnel in the field, clothing and the provision of meals and accommodation for men on leave.

1949 Australian Aboriginal activist, Anthony Martin Fernando , died in an old persons' home in England.Read about this intelligent but turbulent man HERE.

Into a cocktail shaker put ice cubes,15ml lime juice, 30ml lemon juice, 60 ml apple juice, 120ml Dry Ginger Ale and 30ml Clayton's Tonic.Shake and serve in a tall glass.

1958 The first 45 rpm disc in Australia, Bill Haley's 'Rock Around The Clock', was released by Festival Records.Ahhh they'll never improve on the gramophone I tell ya !

1984 Bob Dyer passed away. He arrived in Australia in 1937 as a banjo player and comic with a vaudeville show. He was one of Australian television pioneers and was awarded an OBE. Read more about him and wife Dolly HERE.

1985 Hark ! Tis the sound of a pink helicopter on high.... Sydney doctor Geoffrey Edelsten announced his intention to buy the ailing Sydney Swans football team.The days of Warwick Capper and tight hot pants masquerading as footy shorts....

Grandma Mehitabel's Menu-

Chicken Scallops.

Put chicken mince into a saucepan with some nutmeg, a little cream and seasoning to taste.Leave it to cook then put into clean scallop shells.Sprinkle with breadcrumbs and serve.
