Trivial History February 17

Yes, I'm late again with the Trivial History, slap my wrist and call me George razz
I was otherwise detained exploring the local Sunday Market, baking bread in my solar oven and baking the vegies for The Tribe's feast tonight in the sun (more on solar cooking later).

1788 Lord Howe Island was jumping for joy at being 'discovered' although this didn't involve a photo on the cover of a glossy women's mag for some reason.

Oddspot-
134 American millionaires, who called into Darwin during a luxury cruise in 1951, bought up almost every single stuffed lizard, turtle and crocodile in town.

1848 The Mater of Aussie writer and poet Henry Lawson, Louisa, was pupped today. Read more about this feisty woman who fought for women's rights and was a writer, poet, publisher and inventor while raising her family, HERE.

Ghost spot-
A double storey bluestone house, on the Calder Hwy just outside of Kyneton, was reputed to be the haunt of the former owner; lights were seen at the glassless windows and a man's voice would be heard calling on windy nights.

1864 The bloke who gave us Clancy of The Overflow and The Man From Snowy River, Andrew Barton "Banjo" Paterson, was thrust into the world. Read more about this chappie HERE.

Great Aunt Hepzibah's Handy Hints-
Whenever you plant out seeds/plants belonging to the cabbage family always plants peas and beans alongside them. Cabbage family plants drain the soil of nitrogen while peas and beans help replace it into the soil.

1881 The first Salvo Army Officers debuted on Aussie soil; Captain and Mrs. Thomas Sutherland made their entrance in Adelaide with plans to start an Aussie Corps of the Salvo's.

1882 The very first Test cricket match was played at Sydney Cricket Ground. Blind umpires optional.

Great Uncle Rupert's Ripper Refreshments-
Summer Punch.
Into a blender throw peeled oranges and grapefruit, blitz till all is pulpy. Mix in a large punch bowl with champagne and vodka.
*Great Uncle Rupert advocates responsible service of alcohol and drinking in moderation.

1883 Mr Ashwell , in the UK, obviously suffered several rude interruptions while he was spending a penny as he presented his patent for the "Vacant/Engaged" toilet door lock sign today.

1909 Marjorie Lawrence , the great Aussie soprano ( not the one who sang songs to the big boys) was dropped off by the Budgie. Read more of Marjorie HERE.

1934 A multiple birth within a single baby happened today when Barry Humphries was presented to the world. It was only later he discovered Dame Edna Everage, Sir Les Patterson and Sandy Stone sharing his skin. Read more of this talented wit HERE.

1935 For some reason daily air services between Sydney and Canberra hustled forth today.

1936 Reg Ansett made like a bird and took to the skies with Ansett Airlines.

Grandma Mehitabel's Menu-
Quince Honey.
Peel and core 3 quinces and 2 pineapples then chop the fruit very finely.
Boil up 2.3kgs of sugar in 500mls of water for approx. 20 mins then add the fruit and boil for a further 30-40 mins.
Store in sealed, sterilised jars.
