Trivial History February 23

After a hearty breakfast of toasted home-made bread topped with home-grown tomatoes, washed down with home-grown fruit juiced in my own juicer and home-made scones with home-made jam for morning tea I've put in an order for my own cow for the butter and cream....but I aint holding my breath on that onelol

1849 Things were so crook in Westralia that a public meeting in Perth voted itself off the island for to become a penal colony to help with the so-ill-if-it-was-a-horse-it-would-have-been-shot economy.

The White Hart Hotel (now part of the Hotel Windsor) was renowned for its sports meetings, with pig and goat races being held on the current-day site of Victoria's Parliament House....some things haven't changed then! Meow.

1884 & 1994 Tambo Tambo, a Palm Island native, died while working for Barnum and Bailey's Circus. His remains were found in 1993 and today in 1994 he was given a decent burial on his home soil. More details HERE.

Great Aunt Hepzibah's Handy Hints-
If you find your casserole or stew has become too salty simply add some finely chopped spuds - these will absorb the salt and help thicken the dish.

1987 Think big, think hefty, think brick...the first mobile phone call was made in Australia, no doubt by some bloke on a train bragging loudly about his drinking/shagging/drag racing/(insert any annoying subject here) session from the night before.

Great Uncle Rupert's Ripper Refreshments-
Jean Gabin.
Gently heat 1 1/2 oz dark rum, 1 tablespoon maple syrup, 3/4 oz brandy and 5 oz milk in a small saucepan. Pour into a heat resistant glass, sprinkle with nutmeg and cinnamon and serve.
*Great Uncle Rupert advocates responsible service of alcohol and drinking in moderation.

1989 They better be gold plated knitting needles....a Japanese buyer forked out an eye-boggling record $300,850 smackers for a bale of Aussie wool weighing 100 kgs...I'm guessing it wasn't made into socks and beanies.

1998 Brisvegas nightlife took on a whole new meaning when generators broke down at 4 different power stations with blackouts hitting Brissy and almost all areas of S-E Qld.

Grandma Mehitabel's Menu-
Mini Bread Quiches.
With a rolling pin flatten 12 pieces of bread with the crusts removed. Butter and mould into 12 muffin tins, butter side down.
Whip 3 eggs, finely chopped ham/bacon, onion, grated carrot, zucchini and cheese together, pour into each muffin tin.
