Trivial History March 24

Mornin' all!

Tis the Feast Day of Britannia. Of course we won't sing the following ditty that used to be sung around Boy Scout campfires, oh no, no, no!
Rule Britannia with marmalade and jam, 5 Chinese crackers up your ********, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang!

It's also World Tuberculosis Day. Click HERE to find out what you can do to help eradicate this vicious disease.

To loosen up a packet of dark brown sugar that has hardened, place it in a bowl with a slice of fresh bread on top and cover with cling wrap. Leave overnight and in the morning it will be loose and easy to cook with.

1879 The bridge at Murray Bridge in South Oz - as you can't have a Murray Bridge without a bridge - was opened for traffic. Playing catch up, as always, it was adapted for choo-choo's in 1886.

1883 The Salvo's fish and chip wrapper newspaper Warcry was flogged sold for the first time in Sydney

Grandma Mehitabel's Menu-
Fish Pie.
Take several fillets of fish, grind them in the meat grinder with plenty of leeks, onions, cauliflowers and parsnips. In a saucepan heat a tablespoon of butter, add finely chopped onions and saute, then add plain flour to thicken.
Slowly add milk whilst stirring until you have a thick sauce, add the fish and vegie mixture.
Simmer gently (you may need to add a little more milk) for 30 mins, season to taste then let cool.
Line a pie dish with cold mashed potato, sprinkle with grated cheese then spoon the fish into it.
Cover with a piece of pastry, cutting a small hole in the centre to allow steam to escape.
Bake in a moderate oven for approx 30-40 mins or until the pastry is golden brown.

1907 The world's first surf reel was demonstrated at Bondi Beach. They seemed to be doing a lot of lifesaving firsts at Bondi for some reason...

1916 Always keeping their fingers in every pie on the pulse, the govt introduced war time price control.

Miss Ed Ma Kate Shun's Elucidations-
Take the kids for a hunting expedition for architecture on old houses. Show them, and then let them try it for themselves, the styles of each particular period of housing - Edwardian, Federation, Victorian, Neo-Gothic aka Victorian Revival, Art Deco, Queenslander etc. - and then see if the kids can look at a house and name the style and era it was popular in. Borrow and read the book "A Home Among The Gum Trees".

1980 The Aussie Olympic Federation stood their ground and announced they'd send a delegation to Moscow despite the PM having a hissy fit and finding every excuse under the sun to stop them.
