Trivial History April 22

Gooooood morning all you precious petunias!
Don't forget the Name That....Thing competition will be posted up today, so have a guess or 10 and see how you go!mrgreen

Oddspot-
A vile mixture of rum and swamp water favoured in Bourketown, NSW, was so powerful that it seeped through the men's skin pores and kept mosquitoes away.
It gained the name The Bourketown Mosquito Net.

1860 John McDougall Stuart had a yen to see what he could see so he popped out for a stroll and became the first white fella to reach the centre of Oz.

Ghost spot-
Fortitude Valley, QLD has a shop that was the scene of a woman's murder in the late 1940's. Several residents and visitors have heard and seen the figure of the dead woman calling for the man who was accused of killing her.

1968 Construction was started on Melbourne's infamous West Gate Bridge.

Great Aunt Hepzibah's Handy Hints-
To stop the washing machine from gobbling socks, pin sock pairs together with a safety pin at the toe.

1972 Sylvia Cook and John Fairfax obviously enjoyed water sports as they rowed across the Pacific Ocean and parked their boat on Aussie soil.

Miss Ed Ma Kate Shun's Elucidations-
Help the kids plan and plant a winter vegie garden with a plastic sheet to turn their garden bed into a mini greenhouse. Let the kids record how winter vegies grow compared to spring planted ones and if the insulation of the plastic cover helps at all.

1987 Simon Townsend's popular TV show Wonder World, that launched the careers of Jono Coleman and Catriona Rowntree, to name just 2, filmed its final episode today. Woodrow the bloodhound had nothing to say on the subject.

Grandma Mehitabel's Menu-
For those feeling sick a large meal is often too much effort to eat.
Boil a pot of water, with sauted onions, capsicums, and finely chopped vegies thrown in.
Finely chop and fry bacon, throw that into the pot too.
A little less than 1/3 cup of rice, a sprinkle of curry powder (to taste), some stock and seasoning will finish the job.
Can be vitamised for elderly and contains everything considered a "meal".
