Trivial History August 24

If I suddenly begin prattling in a Scottish brogue it's because I've been lavishing my attention on the likes of John Hannah, David Tennant, Ewan McGregor and Billy Connolly.
Coz you've always got to have a little Billy Connolly wake you up in the morning.
On CD, you dirty buggers!

Only 12 days to go till the Paralympics begin!
Oh and there's only 124 days left till Christmas...better start those lay-bys, as socks, jocks and soap-on-a-rope really don't rate anymore.

1878 Although they jumped the gun and began chuffing around the streets 3 days earlier, the Wellington Steam Trams were officially opened with a flourish and became the very first steam tram service to operate in the Southern Hemisphere.

1934 That sun-drenched spot in northern Victoria, Mildura, which sports fine wine, fine dining and very fine fruit - when growers can get a drop from the river, that is - was loudly proclaimed to be a City.

1958 Racially-sparked riots swept Britain, beginning in Notting Hill with "brave" white men attacking a white woman with rocks, glass and an iron bar because she was married to a West Indian man.
It's not the colour of your skin that makes a difference but whether you can see a difference in the colour of your skin.
.
1981 Just to be confusing the Church of England changed its robes and became known as the Anglican Church in Oz.

Aren't Cockneys great?

Tennant is Scottish - but yet has a very strong 'common' British accent.

Now now Brian, don't laugh at my exiguous knowledge of British accents.

I'll take that with a liberal sprinkling of Glaswegian, a side serving of Dunbarton and a dollop of Appin, Brian.

When he's in his kilt he could speak in tongues for all I'd notice, Reuben :P

Reuben,

I wouldn't dream of it...although I should point out perhaps that David Tennant just puts the 'English accent' on for Dr. Who. When he's being interviewed normally his accent has more of an Edinburgh twang.
