Finally made contact with the son of my Dad's oldest friend only to confirm what we'd suspected - that the old mate had died.
Dad and his mate had been born 7 days apart, around the corner from each other in Montague, an area near Sth Melb.
Both families knew each other well, with older siblings being mates, too. They all got up to mischief and games together, went to school together, went fishing, camping and played sports together.
Dad went to war in New Guinea and his mate ended up in Changi but he came home and they never lost touch.
Except now.
In the midst of the confusion and heartache of one parent dying and the other parent needing full-time aged care assistance, the mate's children over-looked telling Dad of their father's passing.
I don't think Dad needs to know.
